Paperwork
Free split sheet generator
Enter the song, then each person’s share of the composition and of the master. The tool checks each side totals exactly 100%, then you print or save as PDF to sign. Nothing leaves your browser.
Split sheet
Not legal advice. This sheet records what you agree; it does not make the agreement enforceable by itself.
Key takeaways
Agree it in writing, early
Fill in a split sheet as soon as the song is written, ideally in the same session.
Two sides, two 100%s
The composition shares must add up to exactly 100%, and so must the master (recording) shares.

What goes on a split sheet
- Song title, date and (if you have it) the ISRC of the recording.
- Every writer’s full legal name, role and percentage of the composition.
- Each writer’s performing rights organization and IPI number, so royalties can be matched. Not sure of yours? Find your IPI number.
- Publisher names and shares, if the writers have publishers.
- Who owns the master recording, and in what shares.
- A signature from every person listed.

Why bother
Registration and royalty payment both depend on knowing who owns what. A signed sheet gives your distributor, publisher or PRO a single answer, and it avoids the most common reason co-writers fall out: nobody wrote the shares down while everyone remembered them differently.
Questions people ask
What is a split sheet?
A split sheet is a signed record of who wrote a song and what percentage of it each person owns. It is usually made right after the session, before anyone argues about it.
When should I fill in a split sheet?
As soon as the song is written, ideally in the same session. Agreeing later gets harder, and a missing split can hold up registration and payment.
Do the splits have to total 100%?
Yes. The composition shares must add up to exactly 100%, and so must the master (recording) shares. This tool will not call a sheet complete until they do.
What is the difference between composition and master splits?
The composition is the song: melody and lyrics, owned by writers and publishers. The master is the specific recording, owned by whoever paid for or made it. They are often split differently.
Is the information I type uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser. Printing or saving as PDF uses your browser’s own print dialog.
Is a split sheet a legal contract?
It is evidence of an agreement, and it is only as good as the signatures on it. This page is not legal advice; for a significant deal, talk to a music lawyer.
