Key takeaways

1

One recording, one code

Identical recordings share one ISRC, and a code should not change over the life of the track.

2

$95 once, then free

The US ISRC Agency charges a one-time $95 for a Rights Owner Prefix; assigning individual codes costs nothing after that.

3

Format only

The checker confirms the shape of a code. It does not prove the code was issued to you.

How an ISRC is built

Anatomy of an ISRC
Anatomy of an ISRCThe example US-S1Z-24-00001 has 4 parts: 1, Agency code (US); 2, Registrant (prefix) (S1Z); 3, Year of reference (24); 4, Designation (00001).1USAgency code2S1ZRegistrant324Year of reference400001Designation
  1. Agency code. Two letters. In the US this can be US, QM, QZ or QT.
  2. Registrant (prefix). Three characters that are unique to the recording owner.
  3. Year of reference. The year the code was assigned, not the year the recording was made.
  4. Designation. A five-digit number you assign, one per recording.

The code has four parts: a two-letter agency code, a three-character registrant (prefix) code, a two-digit year of reference and a five-digit designation number. In the US the agency code can be US, QM, QZ or QT. The year is when the code was assigned, not when the recording was made, and the code carries no other meaning. Who issues ISRCs in the US

The US ISRC Agency issues a Rights Owner Prefix for a one-time $95 administrative fee. After that, assigning individual codes costs nothing, and one prefix covers up to 100,000 codes per year. If you do not own your recordings, the agency has a separate manager account. US ISRC Agency FAQ · checked October 20, 2026

You may not need to apply at all. The agency says distribution providers can assign ISRCs on behalf of rights owners, and approved ISRC managers can provide codes to artists. Ask your distributor whether it assigns one and whether you can see it before release.

Questions people ask

What is an ISRC?

An International Standard Recording Code is a 12-character identifier for one specific sound recording. Streaming services, distributors and royalty collectors use it to match plays to the right recording.

How much does an ISRC cost in the US?

The US ISRC Agency charges a one-time $95 administrative fee for a Rights Owner Prefix, with no further cost for assigning individual codes. Your distributor may also assign codes for you; check its help pages.

Does a remix need a new ISRC?

Yes. The US ISRC Agency lists remixes and edits among the changes that need a new code. A remaster generally keeps the same ISRC unless it involves significant new creative input.

Is an ISRC the same as an ISWC?

No. An ISRC identifies a recording (a specific performance on a track). An ISWC identifies the underlying musical work, the song itself.

Does this checker confirm my ISRC is registered?

No. It only checks the format. A well-formed code can still be unissued or belong to someone else.
