Royalties
How much does Spotify pay per stream?
Spotify doesn’t pay a fixed per-stream rate. Published 2026 estimates land around $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, so one million streams is roughly $3,000 to $5,000 before your distributor, label and co-writers take their share.

What “per stream” really means on Spotify
Spotify’s own support page says it “does not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate.” Instead it divides the net revenue from subscriptions and ads among rights holders by streamshare: the portion of all streams in a month that were your music. Because the pool changes every month and varies by market, a “rate” can only be worked out after the fact.
That is where the common $0.003 to $0.005 figure comes from. It is an average observed by third parties, not a price list. Spotify: Understanding royalties · checked October 19, 2026
Spotify’s own “Loud & Clear” site explains the payout process: artists are paid based on their share of total streams, not a fixed price per play. Spotify Loud and Clear: Process · checked October 19, 2026
The 1,000-stream rule
Since April 2024, a track must have at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to share in the recording royalty pool, and it must also reach a minimum number of unique listeners that Spotify keeps private. Each recording (each ISRC) qualifies on its own, and the count is global. Spotify: Track monetization eligibility · checked October 19, 2026
The rule affects recording royalties only. Songwriters’ publishing royalties are handled separately. Your distributor’s report, not a dashboard, is the best proof of whether a track qualified.

Apple Music: Apple’s own number
Apple is the one big service that has put a figure in writing. In an April 2021 letter to artists it said the per-stream value “varies by subscription plan and country but averaged $0.01 for Apple Music individual paid plans in 2020.” Outside estimates for today run a little lower, about $0.006 to $0.010. Questions people ask
How much does Spotify pay per stream?
Spotify says it does not pay a per-stream rate. Published 2026 estimates put the blended result at about $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, which is $3.00 to $5.00 per 1,000 streams, before your distributor, label and co-writers are paid.
How many streams do I need to make $1,000 on Spotify?
At $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, roughly 200,000 to 333,333 streams of gross payout, and that is before any splits. If you share the song or pay a label, you need more.
Does Spotify pay for tracks with fewer than 1,000 streams?
Not recording royalties. Since April 2024 a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months, plus a minimum number of unique listeners that Spotify does not publish. Publishing royalties for the songwriters are a separate matter.
Does Apple Music pay more than Spotify?
Estimates say yes: about $0.006 to $0.010 per stream. Apple has said its own average for individual paid plans was about $0.01 per stream in 2020. Apple Music has no free tier, which is the usual explanation.
Why do websites quote different rates?
Nobody outside the platforms sees the full data. Each site blends distributor statements and public figures differently, and the real number moves with listener country, plan type and total streams that month. That is why we show ranges.
Who pays me, Spotify or my distributor?
Spotify pays the rights holder it licensed the music from, usually your distributor or label. They pay you under your agreement with them, so your cut depends on that contract.
